I'm still working on having some nordic sessions for Gravity skiers in the town park after school. Let me know if your skiers are interested.

See you Saturday!

The Freestyle Team put on a fantastic event! Thanks Caleb, and all of the Freestyle parents and coaches for all of your work and encouragement! All of the Gravity athletes had a blast, and had great runs!

Congratulations to all of our skiers:

Tyler Jansen, Sam Averuch, Leland Burchmore, Will Roberts, Sammy Shuiling, Garret Loebe, Will Plantz, Finn Bailis, Jack Stevens, Jackson Tharp and Will Janson!  You guys were amazing!

See you Saturday!

Great Job at the Vertical Challenge Everyone!

Be sure to collect the donations from your Sponsors and return it to Carly by February 15. The group that collects the most $$$ will win something great and the individual that collects the most will win and Ipod!

Thanks for all of your efforts in helping the club raise funds!

All of the groups have really hit their stride for the season. I am so impressed with the level of skill that I’m seeing in all of the kids this season! They are skiing faster and successfully venturing out on to more challenging terrain than I have seen in any other year!

The Gravity team really poured it on and had a great time at our race last week! There was a great energy at the finish line as parents and teammates cheered for the racers. The sportsmanship the kids showed was equally impressive! It’s great to see athletes supporting, and celebrating successes together! Many of the kids had their best Nastar medal finish of the season with lots of Gold, Silver and Bronze finishes.  Five racers skied fast enough for a Platinum medal. This is a very high standard and is difficult to reach! Congratulations to Carlo Pine, Clay Hostettler, Sammy Schuilling, Will Plantz and Finn Bailis!  Great skiing guys!

Our next big event is the Vertical Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 2. This is a fun day for the kids and a great fund raiser for the club. We missed donation day this season and we won’t be having the snow ball this year so this will be our main fund raiser of the season. Click on TSSC EVENTS for details.

Friday,January 4, Melissa Plantz: First Gravity Home Race

It’s time to wax your skis,  practice your tuck, get in the Nastar course and go FAST.  Our first Gravity Home Race will be Monday and Tuesday January 14 and 15. (During Ski PE) The race department will have all of the Gravity athletes entered in to their computer and each racer will get a number sticker at the start of the ski day. Racers will warm up with their regular groups, get their moves dialed and head to the start of the NASTAR course together at 10:00. Racers should be on course from 10:00 – 11:15 for any parents who would like to watch, cheer and make noise for their favorite competitors. We will have an awards lunch at Big Billies with everyone (bring or buy your lunch). Ribbons will be awarded to 1st – 10th place and all participants for boys and girls.

This is a fun race and a great time for the athletes to show off their developing skills. Our coaches will be rewarding focus and participation and a positive competitive attitude. Each athlete will be encouraged to beat their best time rather than their friend’s times.  Please help support our foundation of positive coaching and the fun of racing by supporting your athletes results unconditionally.
Hope to see you at the Natar Hill and/or  Big Billies next week.

Check out the TSSC Events Tab for a slide show of skiing with Daron and Casey!

Several Gravity athletes along with the TSSC Alpine team took advantage of the opportunity to ski with Olympic skiers Daron Ralves and Casey Puckett !

Hope to see you all on the hill tomorrow at 9:30 for Gravity training.

As you know, it has been very cold so  starting out first thing in the morning with hand warmers, toe warmers and neck gators on would be smart idea.  The warmers last for 6 to 8 hours so they should last all day for the kids. Being cold is the number one thing that takes the fun out of skiing!

Thank you so much to all of our parent volunteers that skied with groups and helped kids on the chair lifts in December! It helps so much to have a friendly, understanding person following and helping the kids get settled!

All of our groups are settled, comfortable and ready to take off with their new skills.  As we come in to the middle of our season we will not need parent volunteers skiing with any of the groups.  The coaches are able to handle their groups in any situation and the kids should all be comfortable riding the lifts with adults from the line. It is important for the coaches to not have drop in parents during their sessions so they can keep moving forward with their technical skiing focus and deal with any unforeseen issues that come up as a team with the group. Thanks for your understanding and support with this. If you ever have a question or concern about your child’s group please email or call me at 970-708-2152. You can reach me on the hill during any Gravity session if you need to.
Hope you all are having a fun break and have had a chance to get out and ski the new snow!

Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007

Melissa Plantz:  Saturday was another action packed powder day! I saw lots of psyched gravity skiers tearing it up on chair 5... especially on Rubber Ducky and Silver Tip and a few adventurous groups riding the rut line on Zulu Queen. If any of you parents don't know where these runs are you might want to get your skiers to take you on an adventure after we finish on Saturday!

On FRIDAY Dec. 14th TSSC athletes will have the opportunity to ski with Darren Ralves and other Jeep Tour athletes. We will meet at the club house ready to ski at 12:00 and ski around with the Jeep tour athletes for about an hour. Any interested skiers need to email me before tomorrow so we have a head count for the Jeep coordinators. Gravity athletes must get permission to be absent from school for this event. We may have another opportunity ski with the Jeep Tour skiers on Sunday, Dec. 16. I'll keep you posted as I find out details. This will be a great opportunity for our young aspiring ski team!

Logistically everything is going well for team gravity this season. The groups are getting pretty solid now as we head into our third week. If your skier has been moving around to different groups and coaches you should start to see more consistancy from here on out. We still keep our groups flexible so if someone is feeling like taking it easy or pushing it really hard they can move around as needed. We have 10 groups of various ages and speeds so we should be able to find a good fit for all of our athletes!

Thanks for letting me know when your child will not make it to training. THis helps us get out skiing on time without worrying about leaving anybody behind!

Here are a few reminders that will help us keep things running smooth so the kids can have maximum fun on the hill:

Please make sure your gravity skier is well fed before dropping them off for the day. A hungry skier will  have low energy, get cold easily and have a hard time keeping up with the group which translates to no fun at all! You can give your athlete the best possible start for their ski day by giving them a big breakfast!!

Dress warm! It's much colder on top of the mountain than it is at the bottom of the Gondola. Neck gators or a jacket with a colar high enough to cover the chin and mouth are essential! Keep a pair of hand warmers in the pocket of your ski jacket... just in case.

Club start and finish times:

Gravity - All groups Leave at 9:30   Return for Pick up at 2:30

Freestyle- Jr. mogul team   leave at   9:30  return 3:00

Bumps and Jumps  leave 10:00 return 3:00

Alpine -  All Groups Leave 9:15  return 2:00

If you plan to have an older sibling pick up your child please let their coach know that you will not see them at 2:30. It's okay for skiers to wait at the club house until 3:00 but they will not be attended by coaches and will not be under the responsibility of TSSC after 2:30.

Lunch -  Gorrono has informed us that they are changing their menu and atmosphere to a more upscale restaurant and would prefer TSSC athletes eat lunch at Big Billies or The Pizza Place. We may also get a lunch deal at Chair 8 but skiers will not be able to use the money on their pass to pay. All of these choices are great but it may be more difficult to know where your child is at lunch time if you need to bring the money or check in with them. Make sure they have at least $10.00  if they are buying lunch. If you pack their lunch, please give it directly to their coach. We have had numerous problems with kids not being able to find their lunches in the club house.

That's all I can think of for now. See you all on Saturday. It might be our first training day without blizzard conditions!

Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007

Melissa Plantz:  Thanks to everyone for a great first day on the hill!! The new snow made for a fantastic day even with the limited terrain. The smiles and enthusiasm in all of the groups was a site to see. Thanks so much to the parents for sending your kids, I mean athletes, dressed for the weather! All of our groups skied all day with a good lunch and no warm up stops! I thought that was impressive for the younger athletes. They were all too psyched about the powder on Peekaboo to go in!.

A big thanks to all of our coaches for keeping a great pace with the athletes,  keeping them moving safely on the mountain and making the day fun! All of our groups stayed together extremely well, stopped in safe places and were flawless with their lift loading!  Our groups worked out very well ability wise but we will be doing some fine tuning for next Saturday.

One thing  we can streamline  next week is our lunch break.

Next week, each coach will have a backpack to collect their group's sack lunches. The coach will leave the pack at a restaurant or in the club house depending on their plan for the day.  Coaches within a grade level will communicate their plans so they can adjust for any athletes who are changing groups.

Please pack healthy, hearty lunches. Your athlete will be skiing hard and needs the calories to keep warm. We strongly discourage candy and sugary foods for their mid day lunch break. These kinds of foods will give them a sugar spike and leave them feeling tired  and cranky for the afternoon session. We love to see them get their treats at the club house at 2:30. If your child would like to bring candy or cookies to share with their friends, the end of the day is a great time to share and celebrate.

If your athlete is buying lunch they will need about $10.00 for lunch at Gorrono.  At the ticket office in the mountain village you can put money on your athlete's pass so they can use their pass like a credit card at any Telski restaurant including Gorrono, the Pizza place, High Camp and Gisiuppe's.  Please talk with your athlete in the morning about what might be a good choice for lunch. There are no hot dogs at Gorrono this year. THe best lunches seem to be the chili, chicken fingers and fries (a portion big enough for 2 - 3 kids to split) grilled cheese and fries and hamburgers. All of the portions are large! Coaches will go through the line with the younger skiers to help them get their lunch and make good choices. Gravity athletes should not buy candy or gigantic brownies for lunch or soda!  Good drink options are water or gatorade. Hot chocolate is great on a cold day... with a good lunch and extra water.

I hate to sound so strict about the sugar but in the end everyone will be happier and stronger in the afternoon without it!

Over the next couple of weeks coaches will be accessing their groups abilityies and helping the athletes set goals for the season. They will track their goal progress with mid season and end of the season reports. I hope you all heard about the fun games and new tricks your athletes learned yesterday!

We would love to hear your comments. Please post any feed back on the Talk to Me page on the Sidebar.

Hope you're all heading out to ski powder today! Chair 5 and 6 will be open!
